Recently, the Democrats have released a new bill, known as the Green New Deal, that calls for massive changes in the United States. Represented by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, this bill will attempt to solve several extremely controversial issues such as poverty and climate change over a ten year span. Unfortunately, this bill has yet to get passed because of the sheer number of things they want done, as well as its controversy. The Democrats have already gone through many ups and downs while trying to gain support for their bill.

The Democrats have proposed a plan that will upgrade every single building in America to increase energy efficiency by decreasing carbon emissions from houses. They could do this by replacing things such as a heating or cooling system which, depending on the model, could release greenhouse gases. This plan would easily cost upwards of trillions of dollars if they replaced or refurbished every building with more efficient forms. They will also try to solve climate change by working with farmers and coming up with solutions to minimize carbon dioxide emissions. This does not cost much and only requires the support of farmers. In addition, they will expand the electric vehicle industry and by doing so will get rid of the need for airplanes by replacing them with high speed rails. Many people think this idea is very unrealistic in a ten year span since the airplane industry currently is very big, being one of the largest, most popular, and safest forms of transportation. Replacing the entire industry with more environmentally friendly rails could not only be very unpopular with the public, but it could also take a long time to build and implement into modern society. Luckily, the electric vehicle industry has been growing more and more every year, and the only thing that is stopping people from switching to an electric vehicle is the cost. They could simply fix this by lowering the price of the electric vehicles such as what California has done during 2018 when California gave people $7,000 when buying a zero emission vehicle, which has shown to give an incentive to buyers. Most importantly, they want to give free healthcare to everyone and guaranteed job positions. Firstly, giving free healthcare to everyone is a very good idea but it is hard to implement. Other countries have national healthcare but it comes with a higher taxes, something that many people do not want to pay more of. Secondly, guaranteeing jobs changes how our economy works. The United States is a capitalist country and guaranteeing jobs would get rid of some of the competition in our economy making it less capitalistic, which could cause some issues. Now most of the controversy comes from how difficult it would be to implement all of these things so fast. These are all major issues and they simply cannot fix themselves so quickly. It could take decades more of arguing and political battles to fully implement all of these major issues. Many people believe that this bill will not pass due to how many things they are trying to fix. Generally, bills that are trying to solve one small issue get passed much more often compared to bills that try to fix many issues. In this case it would practically already kill this bill and there would be no way it could pass and get implemented.

Overall, the ideas in this bill all have good intentions for the United States. Unfortunately, the bill would be extremely costly for the government on a national and local level adding trillions of dollars to debt that we still have yet to pay off. According to the Democrat party, this will cost ninety three trillion dollars to fully implement. For a reference point, the United States only has a budget of around four trillion every year. Politicians also say that some of these ideas, such as destroying the airline industry, which is one of the largest forms of transportation, are completely unrealistic or nearly impossible to accomplish. It would be very difficult to convince hundreds of millions of people to switch over to rails in such a short amount of time but trying to increase electric vehicle popularity is not impossible and could be passed if it were to be a bill on its own. The Green New Deal would also have a higher passing chance if it had a longer time to accomplish all of these goals. We will most likely not be seeing this progressive bill being passed by Congress any time soon unless it is revised to fix these issues.
