As Hoco ‘24 begins, the students of Wilcox will start showing off the work they have put into floats, skits, banners, and dances. Homecoming is a spirited school event that encourages every student to get involved, celebrating their hard work in a collaborative display.
Homecoming begins with a spirit week, from October 21-25, where the different grades dress up to earn points towards “winning” the week in a friendly class vs class competition.
Monday is Zoom Day, which means students should dress up like they’re attending a Zoom meeting: a respectable top and a lazy bottom. Tuesday is white lies day, which includes writing a harmless but funny lie about yourself on a white shirt. On Wednesdays we wear pink, a nod to the movie Mean Girls, which leads into Thursday, the reliable and trusted pajama day. The week ends with Unity Day, which involves wearing your class colors proudly.
Skit night — held in the school gym on October 22nd— showcases the exciting skits created by students, with dances in between. Students craft class yells with their sister class to show support, all while attempting to be crowned the winners of homecoming.
The homecoming parade, near the streets of Wilcox on October 25th, allows viewers to gaze upon the innovative floats created by each class. The homecoming court, chosen by the students, will also be celebrated during this parade. After the parade, our football game will begin, so show up with all of your Wilcox gear to cheer for the team! This year, the homecoming game will be against Sacred Heart Prep. It will be an exhilarating game, with lots of food and free goodies, as well as wonderful performances from the Wilcox spirit teams.
To close off the week, the 2nd annual homecoming dance is on the 26th of October, which ASB has immense plans for. ASB President Todd Beadell shared a few of these plans such as a plethora of snacks, drinks, a DJ, a bigger quad area, and possibly a photo backdrop. It is a semi-formal dance with no specific theme.
Homecoming Week is run and brought to you by the hard work of ASB and council students with an aim to create a memorable and fun time. Throughout the past few months, Wilcox students have met up after school and on weekends to make their plans a reality. Junior Class President Samara Jackson says, “being organized and thinking about future events makes it a lot easier for everyone.” Srikha Gopisetti, sophomore class president, echoed this opinion: “we had a whole master plan done in June, and we had our float design made really early too.” By planning ahead and being organized, the classes are confident going into homecoming, ready to secure the win.
The freshmen are gearing up for their first homecoming and while they are both nervous and excited, they are not quite sure what to expect from such a vital Wilcox tradition. As Orian Traister, Freshman Class president says, “it’s always tough when you’re in the dark, because you don’t know what skit night is going to be since we’ve never experienced one.” Traister says it’s about “being courageous enough” to participate in homecoming despite these uncertainties.
Homecoming is a fun event made by and for the students. Beadell says, “school can be challenging, so being involved in events with your classmates helps you bond with them and can be a distraction from academics.” These school events are a way of connecting with fellow classmates. Students are enjoying homecoming season to the fullest, using meetups as both a workplace and a hangout. According to Traister, “getting involved is not only a great thing to do because you make so many friends, but it’s such a great way to spend your weekend, and there’s so many different aspects of it and opportunities for students to get involved.”
The class presidents and their council are in charge of making plans and organizing meetups for homecoming, just leaving students with the task of attending. To get involved, check your class’ instagram or email a council member for details. All your grade needs from you is your participation and support!
