Airport Ceiling Collapses, Raccoon Falls Through:
The morning of November 4, 2024, footage was taken of a raccoon hanging from the ceiling in LaGuardia Airport, New York. The unexpected visitor stimulated chaos in the airport, stealing the attention of many passengers as it dangled from an electrical cord. Unsurprisingly, the scene was posted on social media, where people were heard screaming in abrupt panic as the raccoon quickly descended to the floor. Many passengers scattered as a few of the airline staff attempted to seize the animal. In the background audio of the footage, a frantic dog’s barks seemed to escalate the already-disordered situation. It is unknown how the raccoon ended up on the ceiling to begin with, but Spirit Airlines expressed their solution to prevent future raccoon invasions, explaining that they “immediately notified the facilities team and are addressing the matter with a professional wildlife control company.” Because the experience was so unruly, the incident ended up gaining tens of thousands of views across social media platforms.
After Capturing Hearts for Five Years, Disturbing Hand Sculpture is Removed:
Located in Wellington, New Zealand– the Christchurch Art Gallery received a new addition to its roof in 2016. Created by artist Ronnie van Hout, a sculpture titled “Quasi” embodies a hand with a deadpan face on its dorsal side. Wellington mayor Tory Whanau admitted that Quasi “showcased to us why it’s important to have diverse art and creative projects in our city,” despite feeling relieved about the statue’s departure. Thanks to its unique look, the hand became controversial among the Wellington residents– some loved it, appreciating its peculiarity, and growing to accept it as a part of their city. Others hated it, and for quite self-explanatory reasons: the concept of manipulating a human body part and attaching a face appeared quite disturbing. Nevertheless, Quasi will be a remembered sculpture for the Wellington residents who came to know and appreciate– or depreciate– it. Next, Quasi will infiltrate a town in Australia, prepared to spark new controversy among its future admirers.
Woman Breaks World Record for Eating Rice With Chopsticks:
24-year-old Sumaiya Khan, a Bangladeshi woman with impressive chopstick-handling skills, broke a world record for rice consumption. In one minute, she was able to eat 37 grains of rice– breaking the previous record of 27. The rules were extremely specific: if a second grain of rice was picked up with the chopsticks and consumed, neither of those grains would count towards her score. Additionally, the rice needed to be put directly into her mouth, not tossed or dropped in. Despite these difficult rules, Khan was determined to break the record, thanks to a colleague who encouraged her to attempt the feat. Khan explains that she had an obsession with ramen, and has since eaten most foods with chopsticks, giving her tons of practice. She was widely praised after completing the feat, her name now being placed with other world record holders. Khan expresses, “It’s actually amazing and I’m honored and blessed and proud and every other good thing that I can say about it.”
