The 82nd annual Golden Globes were held on January 5 in Beverly Hills, California, celebrating excellence in international film and television. Known as the second most important ceremony to film (sorry Emmys), The Golden Globes differ from the prestigious Oscars as most categories are split into two: drama and comedy/musical. Their awards, like the name suggests, depict a golden globe on a pedestal with strips of film around it. Common awards include: Best Motion Picture, Best Female/Male Actor in a motion picture, Best Female/Male Supporting Character, and more.
Year after year, this event draws fans with its memorable and shocking moments. Arguably the most notable moment of the night was seeing the ring on Zendaya’s finger, proudly displayed as a way to announce her engagement to Tom Holland. Fans were quick to label it as fake news, but were caught off guard when they confirmed the speculations. Sophomore Ainsley Cleveland was excited for this announcement, stating “I thought it was great that she didn’t do a traditional announcement and decided to do her own thing.”
Nikki Glaser hosted the Globes this year, both flamed and celebrated for her opening monologue that contained a whopping ten different outfit changes. After delivering a Diddy joke to the crowd by comparing him to Zendaya’s movie Challengers, the audience drew several loud gasps instead of the expected laughs. Throughout the event, it’s safe to say that the jokes were a hit or miss.
The nominees and award winners of the night evoked mixed emotions of satisfaction and confusion. A particular outrage drew from fans of the new Wicked movie, which was nominated for several awards but only took home one for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. “Emilia Pérez” was proclaimed the best musical/comedy, taking home four Golden Globes, leaving many fans outraged, believing it is undeserving of the awards it has received. Clips of the musical have started to go viral on social media with captions such as “remember, this is the musical that won over Wicked,” sparking anger as it has started to get ridiculed for its heavy topics and the inability of the actors to hold a note. Cleveland argued that “Wicked deserved to win best musical picture…it had a huge success and was the most well known.”
Zoe Saldana’s win for Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for “Emilia Pérez” also sparked mixed reactions leaving Selena Gomez cheering for joy as Saldana broke down on stage for her first Golden Globe. A similar experience happened for Demi Moore who won Best Performance by a Female Actress in a Motion Picture for The Substance. She tearfully exclaimed, “This is the first time I’ve ever won anything,” a moment that had the room in tears.
As always, the Golden Globes also serves as a fashion show, leaving fans to leave opinions on the best or worst dressed. There were many opinions, but Cleveland announced she believed Zendaya was among the best dressed and Timothee Chalamet was the worst. From poofy red ribbons to an entire suede suit with a bucket hat, the outfits never cease to amaze a single fan.
In the end, The Golden Globes was filled with hilarious highs and lows, spectacular announcements and heartwarming moments. Awards ceremonies are always a highlight of pop culture in all its forms – from unforgettable fashion moments to surprising victories. See you next year!
