April’s Rants and Raves

Rants:

Boring texters: Nothing irks me more in this world than seeing my phone light up with a notification, getting this false sense of excitement that someone actually wants to talk to me, and just receiving the letter “K”. My whole aura just deflates like a balloon being pricked by a needle. I do not understand how a human being can reply to an entire phrase with just a single letter. I just want to get to know you, have a meaningful conversation and maybe have a peek into the depth of your very character.  Although, if you don’t want to go that deep I guess we can just make small talk. Even with that option, you still have to destroy my ego and reply with either “k”, “haha”, “oh”, or my personal “favorite”, “cool”. I type an autobiographical novel and the best you can manage is not even considered proper grammar. I just can not, for the life of me, wrap my head around it.

Being lied to straight to your face:Lying is already a terrible and hurtful thing to do to someone. Nonetheless, what makes it about a thousand times worse is when a person continues to lie even after being caught. How can someone even bring themselves to do that without feeling even just a sliver of remorse?  It says a lot about a person if they can look you in the eyes and blatantly lie, treating you as though your feelings just do not matter. Some people just do not realize that lies destroy relationships and trust between people. They make it even worse when they string more lies in the mix as they ultimately disrespect the person entirely. Am I really not worth it to hear the truth? This is entirely asinine. The most excruciatingly painful moment is when someone you care about lies when you are looking right into their eyes. It is the same as looking at someone you do not know anymore.

Jumping on the hate train: History has seen this trend play out countless times. Something universally loved comes out, whether it is a movie, song, or a new trend, and for a while, everyone is infatuated with it. Nevertheless, after some time has passed, a flock of haters come out of the woods like a pack of bloodthirsty wolves. These hate mongers have ruined everything I love, starting from my childhood. First, they came after the greatest kid’s karate action show of all time, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. They called it lame, cheesy and full of bad acting; but that is the high point of Power Rangers. They do not care though. They hate on things to make people who actually have a soul feel bad about.  A perfect example that is pretty common to recent date is the movie La La Land. When the movie first came out, people were talking about how it is one of the most revolutionary films of all time. After three months, the trolls of the internet domain came in droves to call it the most overrated film of all time. They even managed to bring down La La Lands IMDB score by .3 points. If this continues, everyone will be as bitter and infuriating as the haters in question.

Raves:

March madness: What a wonderful time of the year. The upsets, the Cinderella stories and the buzzer beaters; It is pure ecstasy for sports fans. March Madness encapsulates what sports ultimately are; the greatest reality show of all time. March Madness brings an air of unpredictability to the game, since every team has a chance of winning the tournament. In most sports leagues, you have clear cut favorite teams to win, but in March Madness sixty four teams make the tournament. The tension and excitement that each game exudes makes for a captivating, must-see experience. Seeing these excited college kids is the best part of the experience. The passion from these young athletes is so contagious; you’ll end up cheering for a college you have never even heard of.  When you see them leaving everything they have out there on the court, it is inspiring enough to make you want to go out and suit up yourself. You grow to love these Cinderella stories so much that when they get knocked out, it is like a punch in the gut from Mike Tyson himself. This is just why March Madness is just like a drug, it leaves you begging for more.

Cheesy Rom-Coms: I have a confession to make, I love romantic movies.. Whether it is a  drama or a comedy, they are the perfect way to turn a day into an even better one. It is influence is especially felt in a day where the world is kicking you in the mouth to one that is filled with hapless optimism. No matter how cheesy or poorly scripted they are, I cannot help myself but to watch them.  The terribly corny dialogue, the over the dramatic kisses in the rain, and the happily ever-afters; I eat it all up. These movies have a certain charm about them that transports you into a place of melodramatic euphoria. No matter if it is When Harry Met Sally or The Notebook, I tend to bring myself into the shoes of the leading man to relate to their situation, despite having little romantic experience myself. That is the mark of a great hokey rom-com. It sometimes can makes you cry like a hopeless romantic, even though a great majority of people have never experienced anything quite like what is happening in the film. I, for one, have never traveled back in time to hang out with the child version of the love of my life (looking at you Time Traveler’s Wife). One day, hopefully we can all relate to and appreciate , the iconic, “you had me at hello.”

A good cry: After a long hard day sometimes you just need to lay down and scream violently into your pillow. There’s no thought to it, you just do it. You harness all that pent up frustration, rage and sadness and just let it all go in one swift motion. You feel an unbelievable relief to just shout away the pain from the day. People might think this is unhealthy, but I say it is a great form of catharsis. Some people do workouts, play sports, or read while I just fancy having a good cry when I need it most. I don’t have to be crying because I am sad or angry but sometimes I also cry out of happiness or joy. Jimmy V, a former Indiana Hoosier head coach, says,”If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week; you’re going to have something special.” Crying has a false stigma surrounding it. People should know that it is okay to cry, and is a good form of emotional expression.
