Humans of Wilcox: Chrissy Fritschen

Whether you’ve seen her tearing through the water during a swim meet, sitting in the Science Lecture hall during a CSF meeting, or maybe just hanging around campus, senior Chrissy Fritschen is an amazing athlete, musician, and inspiring Wilcox charger. Known by her friends as quirky, friendly, hardworking, and funny, Fritschen is an amazing person both on and off campus.

Outside of her five AP classes. Fritschen devotes most of her time to swimming and water polo. “Fritschen is fast and very driven,” remarks teammate Lindsey Laughlin. “She manages to always work hard and spend a lot of time in the pool, despite her many extracurricular activities.” Fritschen enjoys both sports, as well as the community created around them. As one of the top athletes on the girl’s varsity team for both sports, Fritschen also helps her fellow teammates, both Junior Varsity, and Varsity, settle their nerves before any game or meet. “She always encourages me to just go out and do my best before every water polo game,” remarks sophomore Emeala Talavera. “Whether I’m nervous or if I didn’t have a good day beforehand, she goes out of her way to make me feel better.”

When it comes to music, Fritschen has both talent and devotion, involved in the Wilcox band, the California Youth Symphony, and the Allstate County Honor Band. Growing up, Fritschen could almost always be found listening to her parents’ collection of classical music. Through this, Fritschen developed a love for the genre and was encouraged by her parents and mentors to practice and perform the classical and orchestral music herself. Chrissy began her music career starting with piano, and then moved from Clarinet to Bassoon. Playing in the school band and taking private lessons for other ensembles, Fritschen now plays high-level orchestral pieces in some of the top symphonic ensembles in the state. Although Fritschen may not want to study music in college, she plans to practice music throughout her life. “I’m currently undecided on what I want to study in college, but I’m leaning torward psychology, sociology, or music therapy.” Fritschen has decided to participate in her school’s music program for one last year, as well as continue to play recreationally throughout and after college. “I’m still in the process of applying to college, so where I end up going will depend on what I decide to pursue.” Fritschen hopes to attend college in California and her top choices are the University of Puget Sound and Soka University, for their beautiful campuses and interesting programs.

Chrissy is viewed by friends and peers as friendly, introspective, and fun.

Although her love of music has kept her in the school’s concert band for seven years, Fritschen finds that music falls just behind history and social sciences when it comes to her favorite subject. Fascinated by other cultures, and the countless stories of the lives of those who lived before us, Fritschen is constantly intrigued by the subject. “This is such a cliche, but we can really learn so much from history and the decisions and actions of humans for thousands of years.” Fritchen states. “Plus, there’s always those random little fun facts.”

As someone who is not afraid to stand out, Fritschen has no problem admitting her not so ordinary “hobby.” “If I’m being honest, in my free time I lie on the floor a lot. I also eat a lot of food, like all the time. Most people consider eating food pretty commonplace, but I like to think I’m take eating to another level.” Fritschen describes. “Sometimes I don’t even do anything when I’m lying on the floor, I just lay there and think about all the things I have to do, and avoid the things I have to do by laying on the floor for longer. Sometimes I switch it up and lay on my roof instead and look at the sky and have existential dilemmas like one does when considering the inevitability of death and the insignificance of our lifetimes in terms of the universe. Also, I really enjoy checking out attractive people because who doesn’t?! Like even just aesthetically speaking. I know I’m probably supposed to say I like to go hiking or go rock climbing or something but hiking is one of the worst things in the world.”
