December’s Strange But True

Noise Cancelling Fork:
The Japanese company Nissan has created the battery-powered Otohiko fork that plays the soothing and calming sounds of flowing water to mask slurping noises. The concept began with the Japanese word “nu-hara” from the phrase “noodle harassment,” when Japanese people are wary of tourists being put-off by the sound of slurping. The fork is 4.4 cm wide and 15.2 cm long, with a small microphone that will trigger a smartphone app to play music. The fork will be released if the preorders reach 5,000 by December. The price will be about 14,800 yen and it will only be sold in Japan.

Oyster Vending Machine:
Île de Ré is a small island off the west coast of France that boasts a new oyster vending machine. Bridgette and Tony Berthelot came up with the idea after a surge of oyster customers visited their shop. They decided to place a refrigerated vending machine next to their oyster farm to supply their customers with fresh oysters at all hours of the day. This gadget is not the first interesting French vending machine. In the 1960s vending machines there sold tights and coal

Jesus Sausage Roll:
The largest British bakery chain, Greggs, has come under fire for depicting baby Jesus as a sausage roll. The bakery released an advertisement with the three wise men gathered around a manger holding a sausage roll in lieu of the baby Jesus. Some were outraged, calling the advert “anti-Christian.” Even then, users on Twitter got a laugh out of it, using #jesusroll. Freelance journalist Tom Victor said that he did not see an issue with the advert, “seeing as Jesus backwards is sausage.” Ultimately, Greggs apologized for the ad.
Fried Chicken Bath Bomb:
If you have ever wanted to bathe in the scent of fried chicken, Japan might be the place for you. From November 1 to 15, KFC Japan launched a special edition bath bomb. The winners were selected from people who followed the KFC Japan account and retweeted the promotional post. The bomb was said to be infused with “an explosion of 11 secret herbs and spices.” Unfortunately, this is the last time KFC will produce fried chicken bath bombs, unlike other strange fried chicken products like fried chicken-flavored nail polish, fried chicken chocolate truffles, and KFC romance themed novellas.

Donkeys In Prison:
In Uttar Pradesh, India, eight donkeys were imprisoned for eating expensive plants outside a jail. The value of the plants was said to be 500,000 rupees, or $7740. According to India Today, the senior officer wanted to plant the vegetation inside the jail and had warned the owner multiple times to not let the donkeys loose. The eight donkeys were imprisoned for four days. The owner by the name of Kamlesh was initially unaware that his donkeys were being detained, and had to ask for the help of local politician Shakti Gahoi to negotiate their release.
