A solar car race is being set up by the second year engineering student of Newnham College. These students are preparing for the World Solar Challenge that will be taking place the 18-25th of this October.

Australia is known for perfecting the use of solar power, and by 1983 the use of solar power became official. Australia also receives the most solar radiation, so it benefited the country. There was a series of steps that the engineers had to go through in order to make this new way of energy to work. Knowing that Australia is composed of desserts, the solar energy does not work as efficiently due to the sand storms that take place on and off. Considering the everyday maintenance it outdoes the cons. Expenses were also being faced in the beginning when dealing with new technology, but after a few years, solar cells were created and in the early 80’s it was running the economy.

Making a solar car consists of photovoltaic cell (PV cells) that convert sunlight into electricity. These cells are made out of semiconductor, and when the sunlight reaches the cells, the electron will stir the electrons allowing them to move, creating an electric current. The semiconductor is made out of silicon, gallium, nitrogen, and consists of other elements as well. Hundreds of PV cells are needed to make a module and that into an array. Aside from an array, you need a battery and a motor. Remember that designing your solar car is considerably fun and all students can get creative in doing so.

Races are the most up to look thing, besides deciding the design of the solar car. The Bridgestone 2015 World Solar race is going to take place from Darwin Australia to Adelaide which is going to cover 3,000 km, and that is a lot!!! These types of new invention are good to experiment, because they could be good alternatives. Especially in this case, solar cars are environmentally friendly, and do not contribute the slightest to the CO2 emission in the air. This could be a good method of transportation and people will be more than excited to try it out!

In conclusion, solar power cars have an interesting design and are eco-friendly. The history behind solar cells and how solar cars was brought upon is an amazing discovery. If prices are low and these cars are proved to be successful than people will consider them nonetheless.
