For the 2026-27 school year, Wilcox will be adding five new positions to ASB: two inclusion commissioners, two multimedia coordinators, and a PTSA liaison. According to Wilcox sophomore and current ASB member Itza Cinco, “before, ASB was limited to 16 people including the class presidents. Now we have 19 ASB positions with four presidents and their two VPs.” Wilcox vice principal Ms. Lower says that she and Ms. Murray discussed and made the decision to add the positions to expand ASB’s reach and interaction with the student body and to diversify the representation on student government. “I’m excited about next year having a wider array of students involved in ASB and a greater number of students involved in ASB, so we can act on some of the great ideas that we have,” she expressed. Students on ASB agree with this sentiment and have high hopes for the impact the new positions will have on the Wilcox community.
Ms. Lower shared that one of ASB’s goals for next school year is to “have more regular gives to the student body.” Some of these additions include incorporating more moments of recognition for students so that they can “see their friends or themselves highlighted,” and eventually implementing regular updates on events happening around Wilcox to keep students well informed. According to Ms. Lower, the multimedia coordinators would be responsible for contributing to these regular gives. “[They] are really the people that we would want driving the video updates for school, making sure that we have a more visible representation of what’s going on on campus,” she explained.
“The PTSA liaison would be a great addition because ASB attends the PTSA meetings and reports on what we are doing and connects with PTSA about how we can help them in their events,” Ms. Lower said. “Currently, it falls to the president to attend those meetings… and the president is already doing quite a lot,” she expressed, explaining the motivation behind the role of the PTSA liaison.
Ms. Lower voiced excitement for the addition of the inclusion commissioners. Throughout her time working with ASB, she noticed that while Wilcox has a diverse student body, not all of those groups are represented in student government. In fact, she noted that “there’s a kind of narrow group of people that are in ASB.” She believes having inclusion commissioners will help ASB “make sure that what we are doing and how we are doing it is actually inclusive.” Ms. Lower shared some ideas she has in mind regarding this goal, including translating class material so that “students can access them in their native language” and incorporating more big activities similar to Multicultural throughout the school year.
Students involved in ASB share a similar attitude and perspective towards the new positions. Wilcox freshman and incoming ASB member Ananya Bhai thinks adding inclusion commissioners is “absolutely a great idea to help expand ASB and make it more accessible.” Much like Ms. Lower, she noticed that there seems to be a disconnect between ASB and the rest of the student body. She explained that “sometimes the decision making [in ASB] is separate from the rest of Wilcox,” and believes these new roles will help bridge that gap and “loop in the whole Wilcox school community.” In addition, Bhai expressed that the addition of these new positions “made me realize that ASB’s goals [of inclusivity and connection with the student body] in the next coming years are aligned with my own.” Adding on to Ms. Lower’s point regarding getting more people involved in ASB’s projects, Cinco believes that “with hope, the new positions will definitely help the current position get things done quicker with less stress.” For instance, she sees the multimedia coordinators being a “definite major help” to the activities commissioner in terms of creating the rally videos.
Overall, the new positions support ASB’s role of creating a more inclusive and community-oriented school. “I think our diversity and our ideas are the strength of how we make our school better,” Ms. Lower said, emphasizing the importance of these new roles. She also stated that ASB is not restricted to the ideas and contributions of its members. She encourages anyone from the Wilcox community to reach out, saying, “we are always open if they have ideas they want to talk about.”
