News channels suddenly blared and surrounding silence suddenly turned into uncontrollable chaos, in the early hours of January 3rd, 2026, as the peace in Caracas, Venezuela was abruptly disrupted because of a sudden U.S. military operation that ultimately changed the country forever. In the mission named “Operation Absolute Resolve,” reports confirmed that the Venezuelan president, Nicholas Maduro, along with his wife Cilia Flores, was abducted by U.S. military personnel and then flown to the United States in under three hours to face numerous criminal charges, including allegations of crimes such as narcoterrorism and drug trafficking. This move by the United States not only ended Maduro’s thirteen year rule as the Venezuelan president, but also immediately sparked debate and raised serious questions about international law, morality, and the future of Venezuela’s resources.
The abrupt abduction of Nicholas Maduro occurred along with years of severe political instability in Venezuela, which further escalated tensions between the United States and Venezuela. The United States justified the raid by referencing the Venezuelan election back in July of 2024. The White House labeled this election as a fraud because Maduro claimed victory despite opposing evidence showing a large loss. Furthermore, the administration argued that a group of Venezuelan officials called the “Cartel of the Suns,” who were led by Maduro, were responsible for bringing in drugs such as cocaine into the U.S. The United States then moved to secure Venezuela’s expansive energy and oil markets. Venezuela has been rich in rare minerals, and for years, countries have been trading with Venezuela to acquire these valuable resources. According to one of Trump’s speeches, he states that “We’re in charge…[Venezuela’s] tyrannical expropriation was the largest recorded theft of American wealth and property.”
While some Venezuelan opposition leaders and U.S. political figures celebrated this event, the decision to use military force to extract the president is highly controversial because it doesn’t agree with traditional treaties and diplomatic protocols set in place previously. Critics have described the raid as a “kidnapping” that completely violates international laws. During Maduro’s court appearance in New York after he was captured, he stated that “[he considers himself] a prisoner of war.” To add onto Maduro’s sentiment, the Russian Foreign Ministry claimed that “The U.S. committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela,” and on January 4th, 2026, Antonio Guterres, a UN Secretary General, also added that “These developments constitute a dangerous precedent…the rules of international law have not been respected.” Together, these reactions illustrate that many individuals disapprove of the sudden military action taken by the United States.
In terms of international relations and responses from other governments, many of them have mixed opinions on this event. European nations such as Germany and France, and NATO allies did question that Maduro was an illegitimate leader, but they still believed that there should be a peaceful and just transition of power rather than another country intervening by using their own military forces. Furthermore, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum stated that “Intervention has never brought democracy, never produced well being, and never delivered lasting stability.” The president of Brazil, Lula Da Silva, also argued that “attacking countries…is the first step toward a world of violence, chaos, and instability.”
The capture of Nicolas Maduro marks one of the most impactful and significant moments in politics in decades. The future of Venezuela is now a mix of promises and serious worries. President Trump has told the world that under this new plan, Venezuela will soon be doing “fantastically well” financially. While some people in the U.S. praise the capture operation against narcoterrorism, the method of his removal has left many others and nations divided over morality and global laws. Many world leaders such as Caludia Sheinbaum have strongly opposed the military actions taken by the United States, stating that it broke many international laws and hurt the sovereignty of Latin America. For now, Nicholas Maduro is being held at a federal jail in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently waiting for his next day in court, scheduled for March 17th, 2026. While Maduro continues to state that he is innocent, the world will be waiting to see how the situation will unfold.
